Summer jobs in Tenerife

If you speak fluent Spanish then you have a huge advantage as very few of the foreign nationals working here do; you have more choice of jobs to go for such as office/admin work, reception work in an apartment complex maybe.

Much of Tenerife's employment is around the holiday resorts and most businesses are of the type that caters to tourists.

Winter jobs in Tenerife

Preference to locals is given if a job vacancy arises in other areas of business. If you're a resident of the EEC/Europe, then you won't need any special work permit, otherwise check with your local Spanish embassy for requirements.

European nationals do need to register with the police here if living here for three months or longer. Take out an insurance policy to cover you for medical treatment as that can be difficult to get and expensive without cover, unless in cases of emergency.

Tenerife NIE number

To enable you to work in Tenerife you must apply for an NIE, this is a foreigner’s identification number similar to the national insurance number in the UK. You will not be able to work legally on Tenerife until you have this number. You also need a social security number and etiquettes (labels) from the tax office so that your employer can pay your social security and income tax. (You cannot get a social security number or etiquettes until you have an NIE number)

Once you are working and paying social security you will be entitled to health care within the Spanish health system. Which brings us to another paper trail, however it is wise to employ the services of a Gestor as this can also be time consuming.

A married couple with or without children can get health care under the Spanish system once one of you is working and paying social security.

An unmarried couple where only one of them is working is not entitled to the same benefits. The partner who is working can get health care but until you have lived and worked in Tenerife for 12 months your partner will not be entitled to health care under your social security, they will either have to have jobs in Tenerife, or have private medical cover.

If you are a retired couple and are self sufficient you should ensure that you have adequate medical insurance.

Tenerife work contracts

When you start work your employer must offer you a contract. Contracts are generally for 3 months and then they will be renewed provided they have the work for you to continue. If you are offered a second contract it may be for a longer period of either 6 or 12 months. If you are not offered a contract, you will be working illegally.

Tenerife wages

Wages average approximately 1000€ per month and are usually paid direct into your Spanish bank account between the 1st and the 5th of the month, which is normally when all your utility bills are due such as electric, water, telephone unless of course you live in rental accommodation where the bills are often included in the rent.

If you have any certificates or qualifications remember to bring them with you when you relocate to Tenerife. You may have to have them translated, and not all qualifications are accepted but you won’t know until you try.
